Recording

 

Every song is different and we specialize in helping to seize the uniqueness of each artists’ sound. Whether we're recording live instruments or programming the latest pop-influenced productions, we've got the gear, space, and production expertise to bring your songs to life.

Editing

We believe that editing is the most underrated part of the production process. In fact, a lot of engineers don't like doing it. We aren’t like most engineers though, because we love this part. We can help you find the perfect drum groove or sample to incorporate into your sound. We also thrive when it comes to the tedious process of comping and tuning vocals or removing pesky amp noise. Not every take is going to be perfect but with our expert skills and tireless attention to minuscule details, we love that we can relieve some of the pressure for musicians so they can focus on what they do best -- and we can help them make an incredible and polished recording.  

 

Mixing

Mixing is a beast all of its own, which is why hiring an experienced mixing engineer is crucial to a successful recording. The mixing process has the power to make or break a song, so it’s important to trust your mixing engineer. Mastering

 

Mastering seems to be the elusive dark art that no one understands. If mixing is the painting of the picture, mastering is like putting the frame on the finished product. It's important, but the mix is where the big decisions are made. The frame shouldn’t take away from the painting, but it should help to preserve and highlight it. We generally recommend using a specific mastering house for your music if your budget allows it. We do, however, provide all our mixes with basic mastering applied if you need to cut down on costs. Both options have achieved successful outcomes for many clients.

 

Production

 

As a musician, we understand you’re concerned with figuring out what can take your song to the next level. Having an outside perspective is often the key. Helvig Productions will give you unbiased feedback on your songs, from finding the proper key and tempo, to working out the best arrangement. This is always done through a mutually respectful and collaborative approach. We don't ‘need to be right,’ or even change a single thing about your songs, we're only interested in what's best for you and your music, so we are here to help you make decisions that will ensure each creative choice brings your song to its highest quality. 

 

The Process

 

You may be wondering what the process of music production looks like and how long it will take. Here’s a brief overview:

 

Schedule

 

Once you’ve decided that Helvig Productions is a good fit for you, we will send you helpful tools for scheduling and communications. You and your collaborators will have access to Twist, which is an all-in-one, private messaging app. You’ll be able to privately share files, message each other, and leave feedback and notes. You’ll also have access to a calendar that allows you to pick the best dates and session lengths. Payment is handled online with each booking.  

 

Pre-Production

 

During this stage of the process, you can send us your demos, notes, and references in Twist. We will give it a listen and offer you notes and advice on the best approach for your project. We'll also advise you on the best recording plan to get the most value out of your studio time.

 

Tracking & Editing

 

During your session, we will start recording your songs in the approach agreed upon in the pre-production stage. We will walk you through this step-by-step. We do some editing and mixing as we go, so each layer of your song sounds right before moving forward.

 

Mixing & Mastering

 

Before mixing all of the songs in your project, we will mix and master one song, as a test. This allows us both to get on the same page for all of the "big picture" parts of the mix. This might include vocal treatment, drum sounds, instrument tones, and overall mix levels. Once the test mix has been approved, we will spend the bulk of our time mixing and mastering all of the tracks based on the final test mix. 

 

Revisions

 

Each mix is added to Twist once it’s complete. You will have as much time as you need to create a list of revisions. We will add the revisions to our to-do list and complete them during our next available time slot. 

 

Delivery

 

You did it!!! The mixes and masters are complete by this stage and we will deliver them to you in Twist. If you choose to use a separate mastering facility, we'll deliver the final mixes to the mastering engineer. We can give advice on mastering facilities and distribution options if necessary. We'll also discuss what "liner notes" should look like depending on where you share your music. 

 

How long will this take? 

 

Every project is unique. Sometimes we do full songs in a day, sometimes we do them over the course of several sessions. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. You can do one song at a time, or you can commit to an album upfront. You're always in control.

 

The largest contributing factors of total time (and cost) are the number of songs you have, the style of recording and production we intend to do, the overall attention to detail, and your preparation. If you're on a strict budget, we can set a hard limit and work backward from there. We can also help you decide the best way to cut down on project costs.
